With the purposes of a liberal education in mind, the University Academic Council has constructed a framework called the First Year Curriculum, a program of University Requirements that all students at Notre Dame must complete in their first year.
A broad foundation in the liberal arts.
By the end of spring semester of your first year, you must complete:
- 1 University Seminar
- 1 Writing and Rhetoric course
- 2 semesters of mathematics
- 2 semesters of a science or foreign language
- 2 courses in the Moreau First Year Experience
- Additional courses to reach a combined credit count of 26 hours of Notre Dame coursework
The science requirement must be completed by the end of the sophomore year. Foreign language is not a University requirement, but it is required in the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, and the School of Architecture.
The courses you take in your first year at Notre Dame will give you tools and experiences to help you clearly define your interests and goals while building a sound foundation of skills and knowledge for advanced study. Your First Year Advisor is your go-to resource for understanding what schedule will work best for your goals and needs.
