The BHSP Summer Institute at Notre Dame

The BHSP Summer Institute at Notre Dame is designed to jump-start our Scholars’ transition to college life and their acculturation to the demanding academic environment of a top-20 university.

During this four-week residential experience, students interested in majors in the sciences or engineering will complete academic coursework in:

  • Writing and Rhetoric
  • Calculus
  • Chemistry

Students interested in majors in the liberal arts, business, or architecture will complete academic coursework in:

  • Writing and Rhetoric
  • Math Methods in Business and Liberal Arts
  • A liberal arts course which changes each year

All students participating in the Summer Institute will complete two personal development courses:

  • Cultivating the Leader Within
  • Energy 101: Maintaining Academic Focus and Personal Wellbeing

Scholars are in the classroom from 8:10 am to 3:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, they are in class from 9:10 am to 12:25 pm. All schedules include one hour for lunch.

Students must also attend:

  • faculty office hours on a regular basis.
  • campus resource presentations given twice a week.
  • mandatory study hall Sunday through Thursday, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

As they gain experience in the rigors of college-level instruction and meet a high standard of academic performance, Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars also discover the social side of Notre Dame and begin to see the benefits of shared inspiration, mutual encouragement, and academic collaboration.

The BHSP Summer Institute at Notre Dame also begins the intensive advising process for our Scholars that will guide them in what they need to do to accomplish their goals. From funding and research, to employment and internships — Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars are exposed to everything that Notre Dame has to support them in their efforts to achieve their goals. Our advisors and instructors will tell you — at Notre Dame, “if you can dream it, you can do it.”
