Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program
The Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program (BHSP) is at the forefront of Notre Dame’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our university’s academic and social life.
BHSP seeks to provide high-achieving students from underrepresented populations, including, but not limited to, students from low-income backgrounds and/or under-resourced high schools, or who may be the first in their family to attend college, with:
- a close-knit learning community of current students at Notre Dame; and
- a network of successful professionals who are alumni of the program.
If they are accepted, students will receive:
- summer support in the form of merit-based scholarships to attend the required BHSP Summer Institute at Notre Dame.
- eligibility for funding to support their work on an original undergraduate research project, an internship, a national or international service opportunity, or international study after their first year.
Building on the very best that Notre Dame has to offer, Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars will gain faculty and peer mentorship, community-based service learning and research opportunities, career counseling and support, and the strong bonds of friendship built on common challenges and aspirations.
Among the oldest scholar programs on campus, since 1986, BHSP’s support has enabled more than 600 program alumni and 97 current students to become visionary leaders in their programs of study, in the Notre Dame community, and in their lives as proud alumni of the University of Notre Dame.
Qualified incoming candidates must receive an email invitation from the Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program to apply. Look for it in the email account listed on your Admissions application.
