Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program

The Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program (BHSP) provides high-achieving students from underrepresented populations, including, but not limited to, those from low-income backgrounds and/or under-resourced high schools, or who may be the first in their family to attend college, with a close-knit learning community of current students at Notre Dame. BHSP also connects Scholars to a network of successful professionals who are alumni of the program. Balfour Scholars begin their journey in the BHSP Summer Institute, a four-week academic experience designed to jump-start our first-year Scholars’ transition to college life and their acculturation to the demanding environment of a top-20 university. The Institute begins the intensive advising process for Balfour Scholars that will guide them in what they need to do to accomplish their goals.

The application process to become a Balfour-Hesburgh Scholar starts when new first-year students who have been accepted to the University of Notre Dame are invited to apply. BHSP draws from the list of accepted and confirmed students who meet the eligibility criteria and then sends invitations to apply to the program.
