This course is designed to provide a broad overview of issues and challenges people face as they develop from infancy to old age. The course explores many common life experiences people have and the diversity of life-style choices people can make. Readings, discussions, writing assignments, etc. focus on a diverse set of topics such (Do young children have a sense of morality? and How sophisticated, really, are adult human thought processes?). A number of topics have implications for understanding contemporary U.S. culture or evaluating social policy (e.g., Do schools, as they operate currently, hinder learning more than support it? and How might we better deal with issues surrounding death?)
