HIST 13184-6: American Founders

This course is not currently available. Please visit the Courses section for current offerings.

Instructor: Jake Lundberg

Who were the American Founders? The immense popularity of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” and its creative revision of the cast of Founders has thrown this old question into a new light. Drawing on that energy, this course invites students into the world of the American Founders. It seeks to understand the Founding generation historically, and, in the process, ultimately to broaden the very definition of a Founder. Students will therefore encounter familiar figures like Hamilton, Jefferson, and Washington, and will be introduced to new ones who lived in the shadows, beyond the elite world of politics. Topics will include the problems of history and biography, the nature of political culture, and writing the history of ordinary people as well as elites.
