Instructor: Elisabeth Köll

History University Seminar

This History University seminar will explore the emergence of Shanghai as the major commercial, political, and cultural hub in China’s modern history. Using the socio-economic history of Shanghai from the mid-19th century to the present as a focus for exploring Chinese history, we will analyze the city’s development in the transition from the last decades of the Qing empire through the Republican period (1911-1949) and the People’s Republic after the 1949 revolution to the present.
