FTT 13182-2: Walt Disney

Instructor: Susan Ohmer

This University Seminar examines Walt Disney, Disney films and television programs, and the Disney Company from a variety of perspectives that will help us understand both Disney's enduring popularity and the range of reactions the studio's work has stimulated. Our readings will draw from histories of the Disney studio and the animation industry in general; critical analyses of films and television programs; biographical accounts of Walt Disney's life; and cultural studies of Disney's merchandising, theme parks, and theatrical productions. Screenings will include classic films from the studio era such as "Cinderella", and "Pinocchio" as well as more recent works such as "The Lion King," "The Little Mermaid," and "Beauty and the Beast." We will also discuss the impact of the studio's recent acquisitions of Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel.
