Instructor: Marius Hauknes

First Year Students only. What is an image? What are the different visual media in which images occur? How do images produce meaning? In this class we will explore a variety of critical perspectives for examining art and visual culture at the college level, and examine case studies that include works of painting, sculpture, photography, cinema, and graphic novels. Recurring topics will be the relationships between imitation and reality, between the visible and the invisible, between replicas and originals, between words and images, and between art and technological innovation. The class will include visits to the Snite Museum, the Hesburgh Library Special Collections, and two film screenings.
