Language Exam Credit (SATII and AP)

Students with a previous background in a language must take a placement examination to determine the appropriate college-level course if they wish to continue their studies in that language. A maximum of six credits can be awarded for performance on a foreign language examination.

Results of the AP and SAT II tests in French, German, Italian, or Spanish are used for course placement and credit in accordance with the Language Test Credit table. The credit table students entering in Fall 2018 or after is under review and may change.

Students who have not taken a College Board language examination may receive placement through testing in the Notre Dame Examination Program.

Regardless of credit or placement awarded, students in the College of Arts and Letters foreign language requirement is satisfied through the study of any modern or classical language offered at the University up to and including four semesters (or similar exposure). This will normally be a minimum of 14 credit hours over four semesters. Additional information about the Arts and Letters language requirement can be found on the College website.

In the College of Science, students who place higher than the intermediate level (third semester) are considered to have fulfilled the language requirement and are not required to take any additional language courses.
