What is insideND?

insideND ( is the University’s web portal. This portal makes it easy for students to find University information that answers their specific needs, saving them the trouble of searching multiple ND websites for it. insideND serves as a single log-in for students’ Webfile, Gmail, and Sakai accounts, and it is also the place where students will find all academic information like course offerings, schedules, and grades.

Students log into insideND using their Net ID and password. Once they are logged in, they will find tabs, or pages, within insideND that organize information into categories like “Student Academic” or “Student Life.” All first-year students are given access to the “First Year of Studies” tab where they will find official information and notifications from the First Year of Studies. Students should check this tab regularly.

What is my NetID?

Your NetID is the logon ID used to check email and to log on to other university services. Each individual has a unique NetID that is a combination of the first letter of their first name and all or a portion of their last name. Some NetIDs also contain a number depending on the number of individuals who have attended the university with that combination of first letter and last name.

Your NetID is a computer username that Notre Dame assigns to you. Your password is something you invent and should not share with anyone. (You can record your password to help you remember it, but be sure to keep it in a secure location.)

To obtain your NetID, go to and follow the prompts. You will need your ndID number and your date of birth to complete this process.

What is my ndID number?

Your ndID number is the primary identifier assigned to you by the Registrar’s Office. These nine-digit numbers that begin with “901” are used by the University in place of Social Security Numbers (SSNs).

First-year students receive their ndIDs, also known as “900 numbers,” on an ndID number card inside the “Welcome First-Year Students” brochure that is mailed at the beginning of May.

What is my Notre Dame email account?

The First Year of Studies will communicate with first-year students through their Notre Dame email accounts. It is important that you set up your Notre Dame email account and password as soon as possible. Go to and follow the prompts (you will need your ndID number and your date of birth to complete this process). Setting up your NetID and password activates your Notre Dame email account.

Students, faculty, and staff are automatically assigned a Notre Dame email account. Your email account can be accessed at or by clicking the Gmail icon on the insideND homepage. Use your netID and password to sign in.

Your email account name is in the form “” where John.M.Smith.1 is your full name followed by a unique number to differentiate your account from others that may have the same last name. You cannot change your email address, but you can shorten it using one of the following options:

• The system is not case sensitive, so you do not have to use capital letters (John.M.Smith.1 is the same as john.m.smith.1).
• You can use only your last name and the unique number (
• You can use your eight-character NetID instead of the numbered email address (

What are the First Year Requirements?

All students should complete the following courses in their first year:

• 1 semester of University Seminar
• 1 semester of Writing and Rhetoric (First Year Composition)
• 2 semesters of mathematics
• 2 semesters of a natural science or language
• 2 semesters of the Moreau First Year Experience

Foreign language is not a University requirement, but it is required by in the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Science. Students are encouraged to begin their language study early.

Students who do not complete these requirements will be retained in the First Year of Studies until all of the required courses have been completed.

Do I have to major in what I put on my Admissions application?

No. The First Year of Studies Curriculum is designed to provide a foundation in liberal education and an opportunity to explore areas of special interest before declaring a major. Students are encouraged to use their first year as a time of exploration and discovery — experience in a broad range of areas will enable students to compare before choosing the program they wish to pursue. One of the most important features of the first year at Notre Dame is that a student can, with guidance, change plans with little administrative difficulty and without prolonging the time to graduation.

What are the University Requirements?

To receive a degree from the University of Notre Dame, students must complete a minimum of 60 credit-hours at the University of Notre Dame and a minimum of 90 credit-hours earned through college and university courses.

Note: This means that, for some students, not all of their AP or IB credit can be counted toward graduation requirements.

All Notre Dame students must complete the following courses before graduation:

• 1 course in University Seminar
• 1 course in Writing and Rhetoric
• 2 courses in mathematics
• 1 course in history*
• 1 course in social science*
• 2 courses in philosophy*
• 2 courses in theology*
• 1 course in fine arts* or literature*
• 2 courses in physical education or ROTC

*A University seminar will fulfill one University requirement in one of these disciplines.

How many courses should I take in my first year?

Each semester, first-year students are expected to register for five courses in addition to Physical Education or ROTC. For many students this amounts to 15 credit hours (the minimum required). For those who have a lab science, a higher level math course, or certain language courses, the load may be 17 or 18 credit hours.

What is a University Seminar?

A University Seminar is an opportunity for every first-year student to experience a small, writing-intensive class taught by a member of Notre Dame’s teaching and research faculty. With a class size of no more than 18, students will engage in in-depth discussions of the content, paradigms, methodologies, issues, problems, or topics associated with a given field of study. A University Seminar course exposes all first-year students to the conventions of academic writing within the context of a particular academic discipline.

Are all first-year students at Notre Dame required to take calculus?

To complete the requirements of the First Year of Studies, all students must take two semesters of mathematics. Programs in the Colleges of Business, Engineering, and Science, as well as the School of Architecture require calculus. If you intend to continue in one of these colleges, you should begin with an appropriate calculus course. If you intend to enter the College of Arts and Letters, you may satisfy the mathematics requirement with math courses other than calculus, including logic and finite mathematics.

Will I be able to receive AP credit?

For students who submit results of Advanced Placement examinations, credit is awarded according to the requirements listed in our Advanced Placement score table. Be certain to request that your scores be sent to Notre Dame; check especially for any tests taken in your junior year. To contact the College Board, call (888) 225-5427 or email

Can I use scores from AP tests that I took during my junior year for credit?

Yes. You should contact the College Board to make sure that those scores are forwarded to Notre Dame.

How do I submit tests scores for credit by examination if I did not designate Notre Dame as a test score recipient?

If you did not designate Notre Dame as a test score recipient when you registered for your AP exams, you may mail, email, or fax us a copy of your official test score transcript before you arrive on campus. You may also present your transcript to your advisor once you arrive on campus. It is also possible to have the College Board mail copies of your test transcripts to us.

The College Board will charge a fee to send a copy of your test transcript to us.

What is the maximum amount of AP credit a first-year student can receive?

The amount of AP credit that a student can receive depends on the program and major selected. You should talk with your First Year Advisor to determine your applicable AP credit.

Is it possible to receive credit by examination for IB scores?

To receive credit for International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations, an official Transcript of Examination Grades must be sent by the IB Office (New York, Geneva or London) directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Office of the First Year of Studies. The University generally awards credit for IB higher level examinations passed with scores of 6 or above. The University does not give credit for subsidiary level examinations.

How will I register for my fall classes?

In early May, you will receive an temporary ndID number card in the mail from the First Year of Studies. Use your ndID to activate your NetID, then log into insideND ( with your NetID and password to find the First Year of Studies tab. We will post information about programs and courses available and the registration process there. The tab will be updated all summer, so check it frequently.

Once your form has been completed, your academic advisor will use the information you have provided, along with your AP credit information and your high school records and other information that you sent to Admissions to build an appropriate class schedule for the fall semester. While working on your schedule, your advisor may contact you by phone or email.

What is the Course Preference Form?

The Course Preference Form is an online form, found on the “First Year of Studies” tab in insideND, used to indicate your preferences for your fall semester classes.
How do I submit my course preferences?

The Course Preference Form should be submitted online through the link on the “First Year of Studies” tab in insideND. If you do not have access to the Internet, call us as (574) 631-7421.

How will AP or IB credit affect my schedule?

You will be asked to list on the CSF the courses for which you have, or hope to have, AP or IB credit. Your academic advisor will take your course credit into consideration when building your schedule for the fall semester. You will not be required to repeat courses for which you have credit. All first-year students, however, are expected to register for five courses in addition to Physical Education or ROTC, regardless of AP or IB credit.

All AP or IB credit awarded by the dean of the First Year of Studies will be entered into your transcript. This credit may be applied toward required or elective courses according to the guidelines set by your particular college program.

In many cases, your advisor will contact you during the summer to discuss your credit. You can check the status of your AP or IB credit by clicking the Grade History icon in the Quick Links channel on the FYS tab in insideND.

How will I find out what my fall schedule is?

If you have completed your Academic Honor Code requirement by the deadline, you will be able to see your schedule by clicking the Grade History icon on the “First Year of Studies” tab in insideND at the end of July, usually by the third week.

How do I find out who my advisor is? How do I contact my advisor?

All first-year students are admitted to the First Year of Studies and are assigned an advisor from its faculty in June and you will be notified by email. A link to an FYS advisor lookup will appear on the “First Year of Studies” tab in early August. Your assigned advisor’s name will also appear in the top right corner of your online Course Preference Form.

Please keep in mind that over the summer, your advisor assignment may change.

Should I return my Course Preference Form by the June due date even if I do not have my AP scores at that time?

Yes! It is important that we receive your course selections by the due date. You will be asked to list near the top of the form the subjects in which you have taken AP exams.

When choosing courses for which AP scores are unknown, select the courses required for your intended program as if you will not be awarded any credit; you may add a note beside particular course selections stating: “AWAITING AP SCORES.”

If you have requested that a copy of your scores be sent to Notre Dame, we should receive them at approximately the same time you do. Changes will be made by your advisor after we receive your scores. If there are questions, your advisor will contact you.

What is a registration time ticket?

“Registration Time Ticket” is the phrase that indicates when a student may begin registration and when that opportunity to register ends. First-year students do not use a registration time ticket for fall semester registration—First Year advisors register students for their classes.

For spring semester registration, a registration time ticket will be emailed to first-year students giving them the “window” in which they will be allowed to register for classes.

What is a PIN?

PIN stands for “Personal Identification Number" used to access Web Registration. You will not need a PIN for fall semester registration.

The “PIN” is received from an academic advisor or department to be used for registration and is always referred to as the “Registration PIN”. Once obtained, the Registration PIN will be valid through the end of the current semester when it will be removed and no longer needed.

The “Alternate PIN” is the same as the Registration PIN. Because students are using insideND to access their information, the “Primary PIN” is not used. The NetID and password replace the Primary PIN.
Undergraduate students will be required to enter their Registration PIN each time they enter the Registration Worksheet. After registering for at least one class, students who have forgotten their Registration PIN can find it by clicking the “Forgotten PIN” link at the bottom of the “Registration PIN Verification” page.

How do I change a class on my schedule?

The First Year of Studies’ Schedule Change Days are the Mondays before classes start each semester. Students who want to make changes to their schedules must meet with their First Year advisor to get approval for the change and then the approved schedule changes are made in the Senior Associate Dean’s office, Room 223 in the Coleman-Morse Center.

Can I use my AP or IB test scores instead of taking the Notre Dame language placement tests?

Language placement and credit are possible through AP or IB scores for French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. Language placement and credit for Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, and Russian are available through IB test scores only.

Language placement without credit is possible through online testing for French, Spanish, and German. For the German exam, scroll down to “University of Notre Dame” and use the password “irish1”.

Language placement tests for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian are given on the Friday of Orientation Weekend at 10:00 am in the Coleman-Morse Center. You must register to take these exams.

Do I have to take the math credit exam?

The math credit examinations are intended for students who took calculus in high school and believe that they have sufficient mastery of the material to receive credit for the equivalent course(s) at Notre Dame. They are optional. Students who receive credit through the CEEB Advanced Placement Program or the International Baccalaureate Program for calculus should not request to take the examination.

The math credit exam is given on the Friday of Orientation Weekend at 10:00 am and 1:30 pm, in the Coleman-Morse Center. You must register to take the exam.

What is tested on the Notre Dame math credit exams?

We provide the sample exams below so that you can get an idea of what will be expected. Please note that the practice exams represent a sample of questions that can be asked; these practice exams are not intended to be used as a comprehensive battery of all possible questions.

MATH 10250 – Elements of Calculus I
For students who plan a major in Arts and Letters, Architecture, or Business.
Topics include functions, limits, derivatives, and an introduction to the integral, with interesting real-life applications throughout.

MATH 10550 – Calculus I
For students who plan a major in Science and Engineering.
Topics include sets, functions, limits, continuity, derivatives, integrals, and applications such as plane areas and volumes of solids of revolution.

MATH 10560 – Calculus II
For students who plan a major in Science and Engineering.
Topics include transcendental functions and their inverses, l’Hospital’s rule, integration techniques (integration by parts, trigonometric substitution, partialfractions), improper integrals, arc length, surface area, moments and centroids, differential equations, sequences and series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, parametric equations, and polar coordinates.

MATH 20550 – Calculus III
For students who plan a major in Science and Engineering.
A comprehensive treatment of differential and integral calculus of several variables.
Topics include space curves, surfaces, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, line integrals, surface integrals, Stokes theorem and applications. (Calculators are permitted.)

Calculators are not permitted for use on most of the calculus exams—this is also true for most mathematics courses here at Notre Dame.

ACMS 10145 – Stats for Business I
For students who plan to major in Business.
Descriptive statistics: graphical methods, measures of central tendency, spread, and association. Basic probability theory and probability models for random variables. Introduction to statistical inference: confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. Many examples will be based on real, current business and economic datasets. (Calculators are allowed.)

How will I get my Student Identification Card (Student ID)?

Campus Card Office is responsible for the production and administration of your Student Identification Card. Your ndID number card will be mailed to your home address in early May. Please keep it in a safe place and bring it with you when you come to campus in August. Also, be sure to memorize your ndID number.

• Photo identification—a government-issued valid photo identification card (e.g., driver’s license or passport).
• ndID number card—you will need to provide this card to the photographer at Card Production.

What is Parent Weekend?

Parent Weekends are home football games that have designated tickets for parents. Lottery applications for designated Parent Games are automatically mailed to parents of current Notre Dame first-years in early June. Be sure to meet the late-June application deadline. When should I buy books?

Many students agree that the best time to buy books is after you have attended the first class — professors sometimes decide to make changes in their course materials even after course information has been posted with the bookstore or in Class Search on the “Student Academic” tab in insideND.

Should I order my books through the Internet?

You may be able to find books from a retailer on the Internet for a little less than Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. Just make sure you get the right edition (know the ISBN #) and remember, if you need to return books to an Internet retailer you may incur additional costs.

Books can be purchased through the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, either online or on campus. The Bookstore allows return of new books provided there are no marks in them. Secondhand books can often be purchased either through the Bookstore or from students who advertise in the residence halls.

The Bookstore also offers the option to rent books for the term at a cost of around 50% of the purchase price. You will have to have a student ID and a credit card to rent a book and you will be able to buy the book at the end of the term if you decide you want to keep it. How do I find the books for my classes?

To find the books required for your classes, go to the Student Academic tab in insideND and click on “Class Search” in the Student Academic Services channel on the top right. Select the course subject and then click “Search.” That will take you to a course list. “View Books” is a link below each course number and section. How do I find an on-campus job?

The University maintains a Job Board that can be accessed through the “Student Life” tab in insideND; the number of posted jobs increases as the start of the academic year gets closer. Contacting departments directly about job openings is an option because not all departments post on the job board.

How do I apply for campus housing?

Notre Dame requires all first-year students to reside in an on-campus residence hall unless living at home with a parent or a legal guardian.

Go to insideND and click on the “First Year of Studies” tab. Click on the “Home Under the Dome” icon to access your housing application. In order to confirm your eligibility for housing and receive a room assignment for the academic year, you must go online and accept your application by the deadline which will be sent to you in the FYS “Welcome” brochure in early May.

If you will not be residing on campus — because you are living at home or are canceling your acceptance — you must decline the application to ensure that your campus housing spot can be assigned to someone on the housing wait list.

How will I find out what my dorm assignment is?

Students are sent their dorm assignments by email, usually in early July. The Office of Residence Life and Housing also has early notification for students who “like” their page on Facebook. More information can be found at

Can I move into the dorm early?

First-year students may move into the dorm early for special circumstances like orientation for international students, participation in band, or taking a language or math placement exam. In some cases, students are automatically put on the list for early arrival; in others, a request must be made through the First Year of Studies. Please contact us at to submit a request.

Where can I purchase things for my dorm room when I arrive?

Fall Mall is an on-campus opportunity to purchase dorm room items (carpet, refrigerators, posters, etc.) at the Stepan Center, sponsored by the Student Union Board. Fall Mall is open on the Thursday before Orientation Weekend, and the Friday and Saturday of Orientation Weekend. Stores are also easily found on Grape Road in Mishawaka and Portage and Ireland Roads in South Bend.

When should I book travel arrangements for breaks and holidays?

Students may not leave campus before their last scheduled exam except in cases of family or medical emergencies. You will find the exam schedule for each semester posted on the Office of the Registar website, usually by the third week of classes.

Do I have to set up an Irish Pay account if I will use a local bank to pay fees?

Your IRISHPAY account allows you to see your tuition statements, so everyone should set up the account. You may use your bank or other methods to make payments, but this is where you will be able to access your statements.

Don’t forget to set up access for your parent(s) or guardian(s).

How do I set up my Irish Pay account?

IRISHPAY is the University’s online student account statement and payment system available to both students and their authorized payers. A student’s access to his/her IRISH PAY account is automatically set up when he/she actives a NetID, but an authorized available payer must be granted access to IRISHPAY by the student.

The student is responsible for providing the authorized payer with the login name and temporary password. Authorized payers will then receive an email notification from IRISHPAY notifying them that they have been granted access and will be supplied with the login website.

NOTE: The authorized payer login page is different than the student login page.

To grant access to an IRISHPAY account, a student must:

1. Log into insideND.
2. Click on the “First Year of Studies” tab.
3. Click on the IRISHPAY icon in “FYS To Do List.”
4. Select “Authorize Payers” and click “Add New.”
5. Share the newly created login and password with your authorized payer(s).

When do first-years receive tuition bills?

IRISH PAY accounts must be set up by the May 30, 2015 deadline to ensure delivery of your first billing statement. This statement will be sent by email in mid-July and will be due on Wednesday, August 13, 2015.

What banks are on campus?

The bank on campus is First Source Bank. The only other bank with an ATM on campus is Notre Dame Federal Credit Union. They also have a branch on the north side of campus on the corner of Moreau and St. Joseph Drive.

What is ND Roll Call?

In mid-August, you will receive an email notification from the Registrar’s Office regarding ND Roll Call. The email will ask you to go to insideND and click on the “ND Roll Call” icon to complete a required process to inform the University that you will be attending fall semester. The icon can be found on the “Student Academic” tab and also on the “First Year of Studies” tab under “FYS Quick Links.”

The ND Roll Call process allows verification of attendance for loan deferments, insurance purposes, and scholarships, and it allows financial aid awards to be disbursed. If you do not complete this process by the deadline in the email, your schedule will be dropped automatically and you will be reclassified as an inactive student.

What is the CIRP Freshman Survey?

The CIRP survey is a part of a national study conducted by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) at the Higher Education Research Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). These studies are designed to help improve the quality of the collegiate experience. Each year, hundreds of two-year colleges, four-year colleges and universities administer the CIRP Freshman Survey (TFS) to hundreds of thousands of entering students during orientation or registration.

The survey covers a wide range of student characteristics: parental income and education, ethnicity, and other demographic items; financial aid; secondary school achievement and activities; educational and career plans; and values, attitudes, beliefs, and self-concept. Published annually in The American Freshman, the results from these surveys continue to provide a comprehensive portrait of the changing character of entering students and American society at large.

You will receive an email from us with a direct link to the CIRP Freshman Survey. Your input will be directly beneficial to Notre Dame because we will receive complete tabulations of your responses to compare with those of students nationally.

We ask for your name and home address so that the researchers at UCLA can contact you at some later date for a follow-up study. We would like to use your ndID 900 Number so that we can merge your responses with other campus data to support our institutional research program. Of course, your responses will be used only for research purposes and will be kept in the strictest confidence. No individually identifiable information will be reported in any form. We as that you complete this survey as soon as possible.

What is is a mobile platform based on work done at MIT that allows Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff with smart phones to conveniently connect to University resources, including news, scores, the campus directory, food services, computer labs, emergency information, and OIT alerts.

What University Health Services requirements do I need to complete before I arrive on campus?

All students planning to enter in the fall semester are required to submit a medical history and physical report form to University Health Services by July 1st. Download the form.

Does the University provide health insurance?

Can I use my existing health insurance for the University Health Service (UHS)?

Students who have their private insurance will receive an itemized statement to submit to their insurance carriers. Some UHS services may not be covered. More information can be found at

What are Domer Dollars?

Domer Dollars are convenient electronic funds that you purchase and attach to your University ID Card. They allow you to buy just about anything on campus without the need to carry cash or credit cards. Unlike a credit card, there are no mounting debts with Domer Dollars, no interest charged, and no monthly bill – just a record of the debits made from your already deposited funds.

What’s the difference between Flex Points and Domer Dollars?

Flex Points are included as part of the Gold Meal Plan ($400.00 each semester) and can be used to purchase food and beverage items in select campus restaurants, eateries, and convenience stores. Unused Flex Points from fall semester roll over for use during the spring semester. All Flex Points expire at the end of the spring semester. Flex Points can be added at any time in the Campus Card Office.

Domer Dollars are a supplemental option for debit money on your ID Card and can be used to purchase food, books, clothing, and school supplies. They can also be used at vending machines and to operate laundry machines at a discount. Unused Domer Dollars (balances greater than $5.00) will be credited to your student account upon graduation, and a check for the remaining balance will be sent to you. Domer Dollars can be added to a student’s account at any time and by anyone online.
