Instructions for activating your NetID
Your NetID is the logon ID used to check email and to log on to other University services. Each individual has a unique NetID that is a combination of the first letter of their first name and all or a portion of their last name. Some NetIDs also contain a number, depending on the number of individuals who have attended the University with that combination of first letter and last name. You must obtain your NetID as soon as possible and use it to access your Notre Dame Gmail account where you will find instructions for important tasks you must complete and information about our timeline for the next several months.
THINGS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START:
- To obtain your NetID, you will need your ndID number. Your ndID number is a nine-digit number that was sent in your Admissions confirmation packet. It begins with either “901” or “902.” If you can’t find your ndID number, please contact the First Year of Studies at (574) 631-7421
- After you have completed the netID activation process, you will be asked to enroll at least two devices in Two Step Login to protect you and our entire community from cyber-attacks. Please review information about how Two Step Login works before beginning your NetID activation process.
Note: Notre Dame uses your ndID number to identify you — we do not use Social Security Numbers (SSNs) and will not ask for yours. Please do not send your SSN to anyone.
To activate your NetID, go to accounts.nd.edu/activation with your ndID number. Follow the prompts for account set-up and NetID activation. If you do not have Internet access, please contact the First Year of Studies at (574) 631-7421.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU RECEIVE AN ERROR MESSAGE:
If you enter your ndID number and receive the message below, that means you have previously activated your NetID because you participated in a program here, e.g. Summer Scholars.
Could not find an eligible account for that ndID.
Please recheck the value and try again.
This message means you already have a password associated with your NetID. If you DO NOT remember what that password is, you will have to call the OIT Help Desk at (574) 631-8111 so that they can help you with a password reset.
If you DO remember the password, you can go directly to twostep.nd.edu and complete the second part of the activation process there.
