Greek Drama

Course Number: GE 13186-1
Instructor: Vittorio Hösle

“Among the many cultural achievements of the Greeks, one of the most amazing ones is the creation of the literary genre of the drama in the three forms of tragedy, comedy, and satyr play. Based on Greek mythology, it proved able to make sense of, and radically criticize, traditional myths and to raise the moral awareness of the Greeks – by representing tragic moral conflicts as well as ridiculous features of Greek society, its influence on the later developments of drama as well as on the aesthetic discussion of what the nature of art is has been enormous.

We will read tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides as well as comedies by Aristophanes. The course represents a good introduction to classical culture.
