Foundations of Theology

Course Number: THEO 13183-5
Instructor: Michael Connors, CSC

The scope of the first course in theology is the Bible and early Christian tradition. Students will learn to reflect theologically on the scriptural texts and on major post-biblical developments in Christian life and worship. In this particular version of the course the biblical materials will be approached, not in the order in which they now appear in the Bible, but in the order of their original development. Approaching the texts this way will allow the central themes of both the Old Testament (exodus and covenant) and the New Testament (the death and resurrection of Christ) to come to the fore and illuminate the subsequent materials. The early Church period will be approached through a brief examination of the most important post-canonical document in Christian tradition, the Niceo-Constantinopolitan Creed. Assignments include two short exegesis papers (one OT and one NT), several shorter response papers, and one oral presentation.
